RAROA ENRICHMENT CLASSES 2011
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Raroa’s Enrichment Programme
will commence in Week 8 of Term 1.This programme offers
enrichment in a range of learning areas and will run for
13 weeks.
Enrichment will run on Wednesday mornings and students will
be involved in two one hour classes. Please note that morning
tea will be from 10:45 to 11:05 on a Wednesday only.
Attached is a brief explanation of all the Enrichment classes
for 2011. Please discuss appropriate options with your child
before they make their choices at school. Students will
get to select 5 choices for each block.
We do our best to place your child in programmes they have
selected, but not all students will get their first or second
choices.
LANGUAGES
French, German, Japanese, Spanish,
Italian & Sign Language – Students will be taken
through the introductory course of their chosen language.
Basic commands and phrases will be introduced. The culture
will be explored in many different ways. Languages will
be offered in both blocks 1 and 2.
OTHER PROGRAMMES OFFERED
BLOCK 1
Raroa Glee - This group is open to all
students who can hold a tune and enjoy performing in front
of an audience. You will be performing a variety of songs
to a range of audiences over the year. Students need to
be committed to this enrichment as we are looking to take
a group to perform at Waimea in the end of year cultural
exchange.(Mrs Olliver- Bell & Mr Brownlie) This is a
whole year enrichment.
Camera Curiosity –
Beginners Guide to Photography -In this enrichment we will
be learning about the basics of photography, including finding
out about all the different camera settings.
Expect to come along and perfect your snapping skills! (Miss
Watson)
Structure Challenges
– make simple to complex structures to solve challenges
of rolling, lifting and throwing. If you can think or problem
solve ideas and really enjoy making things this is the challenge
for you.(Mr McQueen)
Da Vinci’s Pencil –
Explore the skills of drawing and develop the ability to
record observations. Develop exciting concepts by playing
around with your very own ideas.(Mr Taylor)
Drama – Learn
new skills, gain confidence and have fun. Games, character
development and exploring relationships and the feelings
of others. See life through different eyes with drama.(
Mr Bowkett)
Sport Referees –This
is your chance to be involved organising and refereeing
Lunchtime Rec throughout the year. Be a part of the decision
making process for the sports, draws and rules. You will
also have a part in organising exchanges and inter school

Writers Inc –
Do you enjoy writing and playing with words ? We will have
fun dabbling in poetry and creating our own magazines.(Ms
Robinson)
Digital Storytelling -
Write your own script and use photos to create your own
personal narrative with a twist. Log onto www.storycenter.org
to see some great examples of what you can achieve.(Mr Dickson)
Animations: Let’s
explore the world of computerised animations. We will use
a variety of software (eg Pencil, IClone) and hardware (digital
cameras, webcams, digi cams, voice recorders) to create
2D and 3D animations.(Mr Hartell)
Science Toys, Science
ooze and Oh’s - You don’t have to buy all your
own science toys or chemistry kits. Some of the best science
toys are the ones you can make yourself. This enrichment
is chemistry based and will involve lots of fun, mess and
learning.(Ms Sime)
Funky Characters
– Explore fabrics, beads & sequins etc to create
and make your own funky characters.(Mrs Brown)
Technology Challenge –
All MacGyvers & Madame MacGyvers out there I’m
looking for you. If you’re a critical creative thinker
& love to problem solve using all those gadgets around
you then come work for me! Each weekl look at ‘stuff’
& ‘what stuff’ we can make out of the ‘stuff’.
There will also be challenges for you to problem solve using
only limited resources available to you. The opportunity
to compete at the regional challenge competition may be
available for some.(Ms Collins)
Tingling Tastebuds -
Delicious food and high class cooking isn’t luck –
it’s science. Learn some of the secrets of the great
chefs. Experience how chemical reactions help Masterchefs
to create the perfect dish. Get essential know-how for Raroa’s
hottest home-baker. You’ll have the opportunity to
learn about some of the reactions that take place in kitchens
around the world every day and develop your own recipes
from your new found knowledge. (Miss More & Mrs Newton)
Lets Make Music
- Ever wanted to be part of a musical group / orchestra,
but never got around to learning an instrument? Well here’s
your chance! We will rock your world by getting you started
on all sorts of instruments including ukulele, recorder,
percussion, guitar and keyboard… then we’ll
put it all together to make sensational sounds! No prior
musical experience necessary. (Miss Fa’alogo &
Mrs Jane)
Perfect Practise makes Perfect
– This is an enrichment for students (of all abilities)
who want to improve their skills in a variety of sports/games.
You will be shown a variety of tips, skills, drills and
‘games’ to improve your fundamental skills in
a variety of sports (Based around Raroa’s PE &
LTR programmes) in a fun environment where we can all improve
together. (Mr Lavery & Ms Herbert)
Short Movie Madness
– Let’s have some fun creating short films.
Using digital cameras, web cams and cell phones we will
film, edit, produce and watch a short movie. Your cast is
limited, your budget is nothing, but the possibilities are
endless.( Miss Jones & Miss Johnston)
PERFORMING GROUPS (Auditions for
these enrichments are being held and students will be selected
for these commitments)
Block 2 :
Stage Challenge Dance – Thirteen
venues, two hundred schools, seventeen thousand participants
and an audience of 25,000 people. Stage Challenge is a dance,
drama and design spectacular where the students are the
stars. It is part of a global event reflecting the personalities,
concerns, hopes, dreams and interests of students.
This enrichment is for all those students who have been
selected, (from the audition process), to participate in
Stage Challenge 2011. It is a fun-filled dance extravaganza
where an important message is taught through the expression
of dance. (Miss Dimery, Ms Collins, Miss Johnson & Mrs
Olliver-Bell)
Block 2 : Music Academy
- Calling all singers and musicians. Rock band is getting
a shake up this year. It’s time to move with the times
and embrace all the wonderful music that is out there. We
are looking for a large group of students who love singing
and playing instruments and are keen to learn about all
types of music – from rock to scar and pop to punk.
If you’re keen to play in a group and give a range
of musical styles a go, then music academy is for you. We’re
looking for performer of brass, percussion, keyboards, vocals,
guitar, strings…we want it all (Miss More & Miss
Fa’alogo
BLOCK 2 Other Options
Game Design: We
will explore the world of computerised game design, both
2D and 3D. Software may include Atmosphir, Trackmania and
UnrealDevelopmentKit.( Mr Hartell)
Fit Fun & Funky Fitness
– is designed for people who are active or want to
be active and learn more about how and why fitness is important.
You will have a chance to learn and play a variety of games,
design fitness programmes and learn the important of healthy
nutrition. This is ideal for people who enjoy P.E. and want
to have fun.(Mr Bowkett)
Green Fingers –
Do you care about the environment? Do you enjoy seeing progress
and results? Are you a person who likes working outdoors?
Do you like challenges? If you have answered yes to any
of these questions then Green Fingers is the enrichment
for you! Come and take part in an environmentally friendly
enrichment where we will create our own veggie / plant garden,
continue the school recycling programme and investigate
starting up a worm farm.(Ms Smith)
Geometric Art :
Play and explore with geometric art, you don’t need
to be Van Gough. Guaranteed success!(Ms Robinson)
Incredible Contraptions –
Make a ‘contraption’ that rolls across the floor,
or a ‘contraption’ that rolls a marble to switch
on a light. If you like making things have a lot of cool
ideas, come & make a ‘contraption’ ( Mr
McQueen & Mrs Brown)
Global Cuisine –
We will develop an understanding of the many foods that
are available in New Zealand and the cultures that these
foods originated from. We will investigate how these cultural
influences have shaped our country and sample some delicacies’.

Primitive Art –
Explore the properties of natural found materials (e.g.
driftwood) and develop the skills to create ‘Primitive
Art Works’. Includes carving, lashing, weaving etc

The Competitive Edge
- Are you competitive in your sport? Are you driven to succeed?
Are you motivated to improve? Competitive Edge will focus
on identifying and developing the various skills needed
to achieve ‘success’. There will be a particular
focus on physical fitness and enhancing your fundamental
skills. Other concepts which will be covered include: Nutrition;
Injury Prevention & Treatment; Core Stability &
Mental Preparation (Mr Lavery & Ms Herbert)
Sports Journalism
– Come and be a real sports journalist and get involved
in taking photos at events as well as being a key part of
the school year book. Yes you will get the opportunity to
have your work published! You can also learn the skills
of commentating a real match and interview a real life sports
professional in a press conference.(Mr Tilley)
How To Become A Millionaire – They
say that money makes the world go round. Learn and explore
why knowing how money works in our world can help make your
money go further! ( Mr Brownlie)

Investigative Science
– In this enrichment we will be learning about the
structure and function of the human body. The course will
involve investigation, experiments and dissections (sheep’s
hearts, brains, eyes etc.) – Very interesting and
a little bit gory.(Ms Sime)
E – Books
- Join the reading revolution and discover the world of
e-books, book trailers, pod-casts, on-line book clubs and
blogs. You will help set up Raroa’s first on-line
bookclub, write your own blog, glogster new book trailers
and help keep the Raroa Library homepage as up-to-date and
out-there as possible. A love of reading in the 21st Century
