An extensive enrichment programme runs throughout the year for all students. The enrichment programme includes international languages, performing arts groups, and a variety of courses that enrich the curriculum and enhance critical thinking skills.

LANGUAGES
French, German, Japanese, Spanish, Sign Language & Italian (new) – Students will be taken through the introductory course of their chosen language. Basic commands and phrases will be introduced. The culture will be explored in many different ways. Languages are offered in both blocks and you can stay in your language enrichment for the whole year.


OTHER PROGRAMMES OFFERED

BLOCK 1

Art Attack – Let’s take part in some Art Attack challenges. Explore your artistic side and let your ideas about art become real.

Structure Challenges – make simple to complex structures to solve challenges of rolling, lifting and throwing. If you can think or problem solve ideas and really enjoy making things this is the challenge for you.

Da Vinci’s Pencil – Explore the skills of drawing and develop the ability to record observations. Develop exciting concepts by playing around with your very own ideas.

Fit Fun & Funky Fitness – An enrichment to encourage students to understand the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of being active. We will develop a school wide fitness test for Raroa Int.

Raroa Referees – This class will give students an opportunity to develop their umpiring and refereeing skills in a variety of sporting codes. They will be given the opportunity to develop practical skills through officiating in class and lunchtime recreation programmes.

Animations in Education – Are you keen on art? And cartoons? Movies? How about putting them all together and create your own original animations using software readily available via the internet. We will look at both 2D animations (e.g. Animationish, Pencil, etc) and 3D animations (e.g., IClone).

Investigative Science – In this enrichment we will be learning about the structure and function of the human body. The course will involve investigation, experiments and dissections (sheep’s hearts, brains, eyes etc).

Food Critiques – Calling students who eat with their eyes. Come to the Foods Room to wander, think and explore ways to make food interesting. Please note that not every lesson will involve cooking, we will be learning how to be creative and reflective thinkers about food.

Internet Investigators ¬- Come and play in the ICT lab where we will explore internet sites which involve; interactive activities, animations, games and quizzes. This is a perfect opportunity to develop your computer skills while having fun as you learn.

Technic Lego – Be creative and explore the endless possibilities of designing and building structures from Lego that moves.

Funky Characters – Explore fabrics, beads & sequins etc to create and make your own funky characters.

Guitar and Song Writing – Always wanted to play an instrument? Or learn the language of music? Here is a fantastic opportunity to learn the basics and put those skills into practise.

Shufflejerkatronic Dance – Have you always wanted to dance in the latest styles? This enrichment is about learning to express yourself through a variety of current dance styles – shuffling, jerking, technotronic, hip hop and a whole lot more. Boys you will love it!


BLOCK 2

Glee Club - Love to sing? Love to dance? Just love to perform? Then come and be a part of history as a member of the very first Glee Club at Raroa! In Glee Club we will have our very own "show choir." We will choose funky songs, create effective dance moves and perform at every opportunity! You will learn how to sing in harmony, project your voice and be a confident performer on the stage.

Drama – Learn new skills, gain confidence and have fun. Games, character development and exploring relationships and the feelings of others. See life through different eyes with drama.

Art Aotearoa – Have a go at being a famous New Zealand artist. We will be studying some iconic New Zealand artists and creating our own versions of these. This will lead up to opening a mini Raroa gallery where the art can be viewed and discussed. If you enjoy art and creativity this is for you!

Incredible Contraptions – Make a ‘contraption’ that rolls across the floor, or a ‘contraption’ that rolls a marble to switch on a light. If you like making things have a lot of cool ideas, come & make a ‘contraption’.

Food and Cultures – What foods originated from New Zealand? Students will develop an understanding of the many foods that are available in New Zealand and the cultures that these foods originated from. They will investigate how these cultural influences have shaped our country.

Primitive Art – Explore the properties of natural found materials (e.g. driftwood) & develop the skills to create ‘Primitive Art Works’. Includes carving, lashing, weaving etc.

The Competitive Edge – Are you competitive in your sport? Are you driven to succeed? Are you motivated to improve? Competitive Edge will focus on identifying and developing the various skills needed to achieve ‘success’ e.g. fundamental skills and physical fitness as well as nutrition and mental preparation.

Technology Challenge – All MacGyvers & Madame MacGyvers out there I’m looking for you. If you’re a critical creative thinker & love to problem solve using all those gadgets around you then come work for me! Each week look at ‘stuff’ & ‘what stuff’ we can make out of the ‘stuff’. There will also be challenges for you to problem solve using only limited resources available to you. The opportunity to compete at the regional challenge competition may be available for some.

Computer Madness – students will use various software to compile their own website (Share Point Design), create animations (Animationish, IClone) and design computer games (Atmosphir, RPG, Gamemaker).

Sports Journalism – Learn to take an action sports photo & write up articles for Raroa Sports Teams. Interview a Hurricanes player & commentate during a school game. Also it’s a great chance to be a major part of the year book for Raroa in 2010.

How To Become A Millionaire – They say that money makes the world go round. Learn and explore why knowing how money works in our world can help make your money go further!

Philosophy for Kids – Are you the sort of person who has a curiosity about the marvels & mysteries of the world?
Do you always / often explore the meaning behind things?
Did you or do you drive your parents / teachers mad by asking endless questions & then having a thousand more when you do find an answer?
Do you like sharing your ideas & discussing issues?
If you answer yes to any or all of those questions. Then you will enjoy philosophy class.

Fun with Science – This is a ‘Hands On’ enrichment. You will test Science ideas by carrying out experiments and investigate your own scientific questions by designing and carrying out a fair test.

Know, Sow, Grow – Do you care about the environment? Do you want to make a difference? Do you like challenges? If you answered YES to any of these then Know, Sow, Grow is for you. Be part of an innovative & exciting enrichment that could help improve Raroa forever! We will create veggie/plant gardens, start a composting programme & strive to get a recycling programme underway.

Short Movie Madness – Let’s have some fun creating short films. Using digital cameras, web cams and cell phones we will film, edit, produce and watch a short movie. Your cast is limited, your budget is nothing, but the possibilities are endless.
